Marriage rates by state: where Americans marry, 2024
Updated October 23, 2026. 4 minute read.
Nevada recorded 24.8 marriages per 1,000 people in 2024, nearly four times the US rate of 6.3. Rates are counted where the wedding happens, so the states couples travel to marry in read high. These are the CDC's figures for every state, released in 2026.
Utah (13.4), Hawaii (12.4), the District of Columbia (10.1) and Montana (9.2) follow. Louisiana is lowest at 3.7. 19 of the 51 places marry above the US rate, and 48 marry at a lower rate than they did in 1990.

2,128,446 couples married in the US in 2024, a rate of 6.3 per 1,000 and the highest since 2018. The rate fell to 5.1 in 2020 and has climbed back each year since, though it's still below 2000's 8.2. The national figures are from the CDC's Provisional number of marriages and marriage rate: United States, 2000-2024 (PDF).
How to read these numbers
- Where the wedding happens. A couple from California who marry in Las Vegas count for Nevada.
- Provisional counts from each state's vital records office.
- Per 1,000 of the whole population, children included, so a state's age mix moves its rate.
- Why 2019 and not 2023. The CDC's 2023 state column repeats 2022's figures, so we compare 2024 with 2019, the last year before the pandemic.
- California includes nonlicensed marriages registered there.
